Gulangyu is an small island (1.78km2) next to major city called Xiamen (old name Amoi). According to Nanjing treaty of 1842, Amoi port was opened to foreign trade and in 1902 European settlements was established on Gulangyu island. There were businesses, hospitals, schools, churches etc...

It takes a few minutes by ferry from Xiamen main island to visit the place where warrior 'Koxinga' trained its private soldiers to get the Dutch out of Taiwan in 1661. However it became a home for many foreign consultants two centuries later. Nowadays a nice tourist location.
