Don't forget that China is still an emerging and developing economy. Even though there are many beautiful skyscrapers and historical attractions, Macau is still China, and a majority of China is underdeveloped. As such, you'll see cheap Chinese buildings everywhere... just plain cement buildings used to house the masses.

Surprisingly the number of portuguese language courses and speakers in Macau rose after the handover so nothing is lost yet.
