We stayed at a beautiful bungalow at the Akha Hill House in Chiang Rai. The bungalows are about an hour drive through amazing scenery up the mountains. Great People and a Great Place!

Jan 19, 2009 - Thanks for the comment, Sacromonte2. We thoroughly enjoyed the our stay up in the Chiang Rai hills. Bring a flashlight if you have one. Make sure you also stop by the White Temple (Wat Rong Khun) in Chiang Rai. It's stunning. One more thing, I recommend trying the Northern Thailand dish named Kao Soy. It's a curry soup and it's absolutely delicious!

Aug 23, 2009 - I'm probably the only person on the planet that thinks Wat Rong Khun is ugly. But I do like the hands sculpture and the and the angel sculpture. But it looks like it was added to since I saw it and he messed it up. That's my no class art opinion.

Nov 26, 2010 - Vince and Renee, loved your whole 10 minute honeymoon trip video. 100 wows! When you were in the Akha village up in the Chaing Rai hills, did you see huge coffee growing areas? With or without trees? I always use fair trade coffee, as I am sure you do. There's a new company doing a heavy promo on theirs from the Akha village. I am trying to make sure they really are harvesting coffee beans up there. Don't know why my right eyebrow keeps going up, so I'm asking. Thanks!

Jan 18, 2011 - @margot980 Unfortunately, we did not see any of the coffee plantation while we were on our little weekend excursion. The tea was amazing and plentiful. I would suggest looking at some of the ESL boards for teachers in the area that might have more knowledge in the coffee area. We meet several teachers while we were there that lived around the area. Hope that helps.

Nov 18, 2011 - The King of Thailand presented the hilltribes with agricultural alternatives to opium growing, including coffee plants. One indigenous tribe known as the Akha was the beneficiary of this scheme. A Canadian chose to back the Akha people 100% in this venture. Thanks to to his generosity in giving the growers a 50% share in the Canadian company, 'Fair Trade' has since evolved into 'Beyond Fair Trade'--a noteworthy business model to emulate in terms of sustainability and sound ethics.-P. Nov 19, 2011 - I have just become familiar with the remarkable DOI CHAANG coffee from Thailand (thank you Robert) which is not only top quality but pays the people twice Fairtrade prices and gave the Akha people 50% of the Canadian company..P.Pachecos, Calgary Alberta
